I was on my way home from work when I saw a woman at a bus stop reading a paperback novel. I always have a habit of checking out what other people are reading, and I noticed that it was The Sunbird, by WS. I immediately asked her if she was a Wilbur Smith fan and she said that it was her first WS novel. She didn't sound too impressed, saying that it was a little too descriptive with not enough action (She looked to be about 100-150 pages in). I told her he was an excellent author and recommended the Courtney series. Hopefully we can convert her to the world of Wilbur.

Anyone else ever catch anybody reading Wilbur? This was my first.

If the person was female, blond, between 20 and 30 then I'd definitely be talking to them!

its weird, i find it the opposite, it feels like WS uses alot of description but in comparison to other authors he uses very little words to acheive his objective. Ive started skipping the hunting scenes now though.

I am afraid I have started skipping the hunting scenes too.Sorry. They don't hold my attention and keep me from getting on with the story.

I have recently changed my job and gone in a completely new direction .
Im now a care for the elderly and physically handicapped going to their homes and one of my first calls when training was a guy called derek who to my pleasant surprise was reading elephant song one of my faves , it helped me to break the ice with him and has done the same with several more of my clients ,I love having this in common with them it helps to bridge the generation gap which can sometimes be a problem in this job.

I only ask because people often look at me like i might eat them or something .
Its actually quite funny to see their reactions when i greet them with a big friendly smile

I saw Wilbur Smith speaking in Sydney at the launch of Triumph of the Son. He told a great story about being in Heathrow Airport just after When the Lion Feeds was first released.

He saw a woman reading the book in the airport lounge and went up to her and said: "You're reading my book."

She replied (apparently): "Sorry, you can have it back. I just found it lying here and it's crap!" (or words to that effect).

he was a very funny and entertaining speaker.
