Bryce Courtenay

Australian author who rose to international fame with a novel set in South Africa--The Power of One. Its sequel, Tandia, is also set there. He then moved to novels set in Australia. I like his writing, but he does seem to be a bit more varied in writing style than is Wilbur. Courtenay's novels contain smut too, though, which bums me out a bit.

Courtenay is a wonderful author. I have read Power of One, The Potato Factory trilogy, and Four Fires. He is an expatriot South African who settled in Australia and found little literature about the history there. he has written about 15 books of which I've only read 5 but I'm looking forward to the others.

Just finished Tandia and really enjoyed it. BUT, I don't think it would have been anything special if I hadn't read the Power Of One.

I believe a better title would have been :
"Crap, A Long And Worthless Waste Of Your Time"
or
"I Needed The Money"
or
"A Very In Depth And Long Tale With A Truncated And Unsatisfactory End"

He is on my list after I'm done with The Ballantines. I did see the movie they made of "Power of One" and it sucked...

You will probably need to order his books on line. The Australia Trilogy (Potato Factory, Etc.) are the best I've read so far.
In spite of how I reviewed Matthew Flinders, I am back to reading Brother Fish.

Brother Fish was a good read. 1100 pages aprox. but worth the effort.

I was extremely interested in Bryce Courtenay after reading all of Wilbur Smiths books.I needed to try to find something to replace the experience and I knew this was going to be difficult.Bryce Courtenay caught my attention as an undoubted master of story telling and in a similar genre as Wilbur Smith,he has a following that is equal to none.Kelly,my wife whom is a lifelong reader quickly got four of Courtenays books to read.The first being The Power of One,and the others being the the Austrailian Triology.I was very excited to read and decided I would read The Power of One first and then I would read the Triology.Read the Power of One and that was it,could not continue on with the rest of them.As much as I realize the quality and sincerety of the Power of One - I simply did not enjoy it that much,I found it somewhat boring hence did manage to finish it.Someday,I may give Bryce Courtenay another go - but after reading the Power of One I am on hold
