Readers of WS will likely enjoy Stephen Becker's trilogy (the books actually stand completely alone) of books on China/Asia c. 1949. He wrote them over the course of a decade in the 1980s and they're out of print but readily available in used books stores and libraries or online.
Top-notch historical adventure fiction featuring excellent writing and description.
The first, The Chinese Bandit, is my favorite. An American army deserter gets into serious trouble in China and must flee with a caravan along the ancient Silk Road route. The Blue-Eyed Shan is about an American anthropologist gone native among the Shan in Burma and The Last Mandarin is about an OSS agent trying to locate a Japanese war criminal in China as the Reds are about to take over.
Excellent books well worth the small effort to track down.
