Contemporary or Ryder Haggard and highly influenced by him. He wrote all types of genres from western to science fiction. But he is most known for creating the character of Tarzan; a series of more than twenty novels. Check out the movie “Greystoke” it is the closest adaptation to the books.

Funniest Tarzan story I ever heard was about Johnny Weizmuller (Spelling?) who played Tarzan in the TV series/numerous movies. (It was on the news & told as a 'serious' news item but I thought it was hilarious.) Apparently when he got old and and was placed in a nursing home, he used to frighten the #@*% out of people doing his Tarzan calls in the middle of the night.

Let’s not forget that Weissmuller was one of the best swimmers in the 20s winning several Olympic medals and setting dozens of world records. He was a fine actor too.

I started reading his John Carter Martian stories at 10 and continued them into my young teen years Dejah Thoris was "My Princess". The original Tarzan stories were a total departure from what we have seen in the movies.
