It doesn't really remind me of a specific Wilbur book; more of an amalgamation of a few Wilbur plots.
What book were you thinking it reminded you of?

Should sound familiar.
"The African Queen" is a classic by the great C. S. Forester. One of Wilbur's Favorite writers.

sounds very much like the plot of shout at the devil. Right down to the Gin-swilling main character. Maybe its just me.
