man what an ending, too sad really I wasnt expecting it to be so damn down beat, the way Wilbur Smith describes the ship blowing up I must say is the best thing he has ever written

I know what you mean. I didn't expect it to end as it did - but it did provide a refreshing break from the norm "hero saves girl and flies off into the sunset" ending.

if you like the ending don't watch the movie, they disneyfied it. (as you can probably imagine)

To tell you the truth Danny I don't plan on watching any of the film adaptions of WS novels anytime soon. For one thing, Flynn 'Flynn looks like Quint from Jaws in my mind, not as Lee Marvin and Sebastian is some bushy-haired, wild-eyed youn man instead of the gentlemanly Roger Moore.

Reading this currently. I have to say, it's one of Smith's toughest, strongest books imo. SPOILER WARNIG...

Spoiler:
...the death of Seb's baby really shocked me - The Captain Charles Little and his face hanging off- Very graphic and hard hitting from Wilbur.

So far I don't think it's one of his best, but still a very good read.

This was about the third or fourth WS novel that I read and it certainly prepared me to expect the unexpected when reading his books.
